A Breakdown of Music Genres

There are so many different types of music out there that people can enjoy listening to at home, or even out with friends. In this section, we take a brief look at various genres that are popular today.

Pop

This one is self explanatory, it is popular music, meaning that everyone can listen to it. There are varying degrees of pop that can be verge on a totally different genre. Some popular artists today include Justin Bieber, Katy Perry, Beyonce and Ed Sheeran, among many others.

Rock

Rock is characterised by big guitar riffs, huge drum solos and evocative lyrics that get people jumping up and down. The genre is broad and includes grunge, punk, numetal, heavy metal and many others. After pop, it is the second most popular genre. Big bands at present include the Foo Fighteres, Queens of the Stone Age and U2.

Hip Hop

This genre of music’s roots go way back to the late 1960s when black deejays began to sample sounds from old soul records and turn them into break-beat. Fast forward to the early 1990s and Hip Hop exploded on the East and West coast of the United States. Popular artists include Whizz Khalif, Drake, Jay Z and Kanye West.

Electro

This genre started up in the late 1990s and gave birth to a whole new generation of nightclub music. Originally, it was house, techno, hardcore and rave but things have changed and other genres have incorporated electro sounds into their tunes. One of the biggest groups out there today is French duo Daft Punk.

Jazz

No musical genre list is complete without Jazz. This music goes back to the 1920s when different people would just jam without any music or plan. Today, it is much the same and jazz dens all over the world encourage players to just turn up and play together.
