Musicians Who Died Too Early

While the idea of being a music mega-star appeals to people, it is often a poison chalice and many have died too early as a result of alcohol and drug addiction or suicide due to mental illness. On this page, we take a look at some of those who left this world far too early.

Elvis Presley

The King Of Rock and Roll died at his home in 1977 at the age of 42. He was overweight and it is believed that a cocktail of prescription drugs caused a heart attack. He died on the toilet.

Jimi Hendrix

This incredible guitarist died at the age of 27 in London. There is speculation that he committed suicide, but it is most likely that he asphyxiated after an overdose of barbiturates.

Jim Morrison

The former Doors frontman died in a bath in Paris in 1971. Again, there is a lot of speculation as to the cause of death, but it is believed that he slipped into unconsciousness in the bath and drowned. He was a long time alcoholic. No autopsy took place.

Kurt Cobain

Kurt Cobain struggled with addiction for years. He took his own life in 1994. He was found at his ranch with a shotgun and a suicide note by his side. Cobain had a history of mental illness.

Chris Cornell

The former Soundgarden frontman was found dead in his hotel in 2017. Cornell had a history of drug abuse, but had been clean for years. It is believed that he took an overdose of anti-anxiety medication which altered his state of mind.

Freddy Mercury

Freddy Mercury was the lead singer for Queen. He led a hedonistic lifestyle and contracted Aids. After a short illness, he passed away in 1992.

Amy Winehouse

Amy Winehouse was a hugely talented singer and musician, but was blighted by alcohol and heroin addiction problems. She tried to get clean but died in 2011 after an overdose in Camden, London.
