Top Rock Bands From the Past

Rock bands have a habit of breaking up when they are at their best. Some of them dissolve because important band members pass away. In this section, we will take a look at some of great rock bands from the past.

The Beatles

Originally called the Quarrymen, these boys from Liverpool totally shook up the rock and roll world in the 1960s. They went from playing pop to revolutionising the music scene, especially after their American tour. Sadly, there are only two of them left now, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr. George Harrison died in 2001 and John Lennon was murdered at his New York apartment in 1980. The Beatles broke up before Lennon’s death and all band members had some degree of success as solo artists. The Beatles produced some classics such as Come Together, Penny Lane and Eleanor Rigby.

This band needs no introduction. Many of their songs went on to be anthems that still survive today. The band could not continue to perform as it did after the death of legendary frontman Freddie Mercury, who died of AIDS in 1992. The band still plays today, but there is something missing. They were formed in London in 1970 and produced some incredible hits such as Bohemian Rhapsody, The Show Must Go On and We Will Rock You.

Led Zeppelin

Led Zeppelin formed in London in 1968. The band consisted of musical genius and guitarist Jimmy Page and gifted singer/songwriter Robert Plant. The rest of the numbers were made up by Paul Jones on the bass and keyboard and John Bonham on the drums.

Led Zeppelin had a very particular sound and are still considered to be one of the most innovative rock bands in history. Some of Led Zeppelin’s classic hits include Stairway to Heaven, Kashmir and Whole Lotta Love.
